Abstract

The ability to recognize number concepts is an important aspect of cognitive development in early childhood. Based on observations in Group B of RA Bahrul Ulum NW Menanga Baris, some students still experienced difficulties in recognizing number symbols, counting objects, and relating quantities to number symbols. This study aimed to determine the effect of using picture media on children's cognitive ability to recognize number concepts. This study employed a quantitative approach using a Pre-Experimental Design with a One Group Pretest–Posttest Design. The participants were 23 students in Group B. Data were collected through a number concept recognition test administered before and after the treatment and analyzed using normality, homogeneity, and Paired Sample t-test. The results showed an increase in the mean score from 70.00 in the pretest to 83.04 in the posttest, representing an improvement of 13.04 points. The Paired Sample t-test results showed a t-value of -11.194 with df = 22 and a Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.000 < 0.05. The absolute t-value was also greater than the t-table value (11.194 > 2.074), indicating that H₀ was rejected and H₁ was accepted. Thus, the use of picture media had a significant effect on children's cognitive ability to recognize number concepts.
