Sarcopenia is characterized by a decline in skeletal muscle mass and strength and/or reduced physical performance associated with aging. Body mass index (BMI) is an anthropometric parameter that reflects nutritional status and overall body composition and may be useful for sarcopenia screening. This study aimed to describe BMI and the occurrence of sarcopenia among older adults at Panti Sosial Tresna Werdha Sabai Nan Aluih Sicincin. This was a descriptive cross-sectional study using secondary data from a previous cross-sectional study. A total of 61 older adults who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were selected using total sampling. BMI was obtained from body weight and estimated height using the Chumlea equation based on knee height, while sarcopenia was assessed using the SARC-CalF instrument. Data were analyzed descriptively and presented as frequency distributions. Most participants were male (62.3%) and aged ≥80 years (36.1%). Most participants were underweight (62.3%), while 31.1% had normal BMI and 6.6% were overweight/obese. Sarcopenia was identified in 56 of 61 participants (91.8%). The prevalence of sarcopenia was 92.1% in males and 91.3% in females. By BMI category, sarcopenia occurred in 92.1% of underweight participants, 94.7% of those with normal BMI, and 75.0% of overweight/obese participants. In conclusion, most older adults at PSTW Sabai Nan Aluih were underweight and had sarcopenia. The highest proportion of sarcopenia was observed among participants with normal BMI.
