Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disease characterized by chronic hyperglycemia caused by abnormalities in insulin secretion, insulin action or both. Green tea (Camellia sinensis) contains polyphenolic compounds which act as exogenous antioxidants and are expected to have the potential to protect pancreatic beta cells from damage caused by oxidative stress and reduce the amount of cell necrosis in histopathological observations of rat pancreas induced by diabetogenic substances such as streptozotocin and alloxan. This literature study is a narrative literature review study that explores the literature with an experimental research design regarding the effect of polyphenols in green tea (Camellia sinensis) on the histopathological picture of the rat pancreas. A literature search was carried out through the electronic databases PubMed and Google Scholar based on predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. There was a total of 9 pieces of literature reviewed, polyphenols in appropriate doses have a protective and ameliorative effect on the incidence of islet cell degeneration in the pancreas induced by diabetogenic substances. The conclusion from this literature study was that administration of polyphenols to rats has a protective and ameliorative effect on degeneration and damage to pancreatic islet cells in diabetic rats. Further research is needed regarding matters related to dose, frequency, mechanism and a wider scope of research.
