Background: Atopic dermatitis is a common chronic inflammatory skin disease. Management of atopic dermatitis focuses on reducing symptoms and usually requires long-term therapy which can cause various side effects. Bee venom is a natural toxin produced by bees and has potential as an alternative therapy for atopic dermatitis. Methods: A narrative review that explores the literature regarding the role of bee venom as an alternative therapy for atopic dermatitis. Data were collected from two databases and selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: A total of 6 studies showed that administration of bee venom and bvPLA2 improved symptoms that occurred after induction of atopic dermatitis. Bee venom and melitin significantly reduce IgE levels and reduce mast cell infiltration. There are 2 studies assessing the effect of bee venom on filagrin deficiency. From these two studies it was found that topical and intraperitoneal administration of bee venom increased filagrin expression. Conclusion: Bee venom improves symptoms in atopic dermatitis by reducing the inflammatory response and restoring filagrin expression.
